Starting October 15, 2024, YouTube is stretching the definition of “Shorts” by letting creators upload videos up to three minutes long. That’s right! Shorts just got a glow-up, giving creators more room to tell their stories, look deeper into content, and keep viewers hooked for longer.
This extension comes in response to feedback from creators, who have been seeking more flexibility in their short-form content. Creators will be able to upload these longer Shorts using square or vertical video formats via both the YouTube Studio app and Desktop. While creators can upload up to 3-minute videos from this date, the Shorts creation tools will still limit users to 60-second videos until updates are completed.
For creators currently part of the YouTube Partner Program, Shorts up to 3 minutes will qualify for revenue sharing through Shorts ads. For those not yet in the program, these longer Shorts will contribute to the view counts required for eligibility.
Why YouTube Made This Change
- Many creators asked for longer videos.
- It helps make storytelling more engaging.
- YouTube wants to compete better with platforms like TikTok.
Impact on Content Creators
- Creators can share more detailed content.
- Longer videos may attract more viewers.
- Opens new opportunities for creativity.
Comparison with TikTok and Instagram
- TikTok already allows videos up to 10 minutes.
- Instagram has also expanded its video limits.
- YouTube is trying to keep up with these trends.
Note that it may take a few weeks for YouTube to fully integrate the display of longer Shorts across the platform. Initially, creators might not see their 1- to 3-minute videos listed as Shorts in their channel or YouTube Analytics.
However, there’s a restriction regarding music and copyrighted content for these longer Shorts. While creators have been able to use copyrighted music in Shorts for up to 60 seconds, the new 1- to 3-minute Shorts will be blocked if they contain copyrighted content. YouTube has assured creators that there won’t be penalties for these blocked videos, and users will have the option to remove the claimed content to make their videos available.
YouTube Shorts just got longer, and the creative possibilities got bigger. So, buckle up for 3-minute stories and fresh content ideas.
