In an unexpected move, Helldivers 2 is officially heading to Xbox Series X and S on August 26, 2025. This marks a rare moment where Sony is bringing one of its published games to Xbox, something the company has usually avoided.
The game, a high-speed cooperative third-person shooter from Arrowhead Game Studios, originally launched in February 2024 on PlayStation 5 and PC. It quickly became a huge success, selling 12 million copies in just 12 weeks, making it the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios title ever.
The announcement was made during a livestream, and interestingly, it’s the same day Microsoft will release Gears of War: Reloaded, a former Xbox-exclusive, on PlayStation 5. This unusual crossover signals a major transformation in the gaming industry.
In a post on Xbox Wire, Game Director Mikael Eriksson shared his excitement:
“We know gamers have been asking for this for some time, and we’re thrilled to welcome more Helldivers to the fight. There’s a lot more coming in the future, and the more players we have, the more stories we can create. The battle for Super Earth is just beginning!”
Play Across All Platforms
One big highlight: crossplay is fully supported. If you’re on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, you’ll be able to team up and take on missions together.
A Major Change in Gaming Strategy
Sony rarely releases its games on competing platforms, but Helldivers 2 isn’t the only exception. MLB The Show, also published by Sony, has appeared on Xbox for a few years. Recently, LEGO Horizon Adventures was announced for Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC; another surprising move.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also changing its approach. Although recently spreading to over 9,000 employees in its gaming division, the company is expanding beyond Xbox. Gears of War: Reloaded will be the first in the series to launch on PlayStation. Other Xbox-developed games, like Hellblade 2 and The Outer Worlds 2, are also scheduled for release on Sony consoles this year.
Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox is more than just a game release; it shows how the lines between gaming platforms are starting to blur. As both Sony and Microsoft embrace cross-platform strategies, players everywhere benefit with more games, more options, and more ways to play, no matter what console they own.
