Google took a move for sports broadcasting, announcing that it will be integrating its advanced AI tech into the US broadcasts of the 2024 Paris Olympics. This innovative move aims to enhance the commentary experience by providing real-time data and insights for commentators throughout the games.
The AI system, developed by Google’s AI division, is designed to assist broadcasters by delivering instant statistics, historical context, and player performance analytics. This partnership will bring Google’s AI capabilities to viewers on NBC, Peacock, and other NBCUniversal platforms, aiming to transform the Olympic viewing experience.
As part of this sponsorship deal, notable elements will include Google’s AI tool, Gemini, which will assist NBC’s “chief superfan commentator” Leslie Jones in exploring and learning about new sports. The AI system will provide real-time data and insights, allowing Jones to offer informed commentary and engage viewers with detailed explanations. Also, NBC’s primetime commentators will use Google search’s “AI Overview” to clarify complex concepts like lane assignments in swimming, enhancing the depth and clarity of the coverage.
Innovative Features and Integrations:
- Google Gemini: Leslie Jones will utilize Google Gemini to understand various sports, explore Paris, and plan her viewing schedule during the games.
- AI Overview Segments: These segments, branded “Explain the Games with Google,” will leverage AI to provide viewers with clear, insightful explanations of Olympic events.
- 3D Models and Maps: Google Maps will offer photorealistic 3D models of Olympic venues, enhancing the visual experience for viewers.
Beyond broadcast enhancements, the partnership will also spotlight Team USA athletes through engaging social media videos and late-night promotions branded “One Day in Paris.” These segments will showcase the athletes exploring Paris using Google’s suite of tools, including Google Lens, Circle to Search technology, Immersive View in Google Maps, and Gemini.
Marvin Chow, Google’s VP of Marketing, emphasized the company’s focus on providing helpful technology. “We view our products as solutions to problems, and our aim is to enhance the fan experience through our tools. It’s about supporting NBC and Team USA in delivering the best possible coverage and viewer engagement.”
Chris Pepe, Chief Commercial Officer for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Properties, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. “This partnership represents Team USA’s first-ever collaboration with Google, ensuring a unified marketing approach that leverages Google’s technology to highlight our athletes’ stories and enhance their visibility.”
Dan Lovinger, President of Sales for NBC Olympics coverage, assured that Google’s integration would complement the broadcast without compromising content integrity. “We strive to integrate brand technologies in a way that enriches the viewer experience. Google’s products will be featured naturally, adding value to the coverage.”
This integration provides Google with a unique opportunity to showcase its AI products to a massive audience. “Our goal is to integrate our products seamlessly into the broadcast, delivering useful information in an entertaining format,” said Chow.
NBC and Google’s collaboration promises to set a new standard for sports broadcasting, combining cutting-edge technology with live event coverage to create a more immersive and informative experience for Olympic fans around the world.
