On Friday, DMM Bitcoin, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange, confirmed falling prey to a hack, resulting in the loss of 4,502.9 bitcoins, approximately valued at $305 million. Became the 8th largest crypto theft of all time, and the most significant since the $477 million hack experienced by FTX in November 2022. The company deals with approximately 40 types of cryptocurrency assets, including Bitcoin.
“At approximately 1:26 p.m. on Friday, May 31, 2024, we detected an unauthorized leak of bitcoin from our wallet,” DMM Bitcoin
DMM Bitcoin detected unauthorized Bitcoin leakage from its wallet and is currently investigating the matter. In response, the exchange has imposed restrictions on certain services to enhance security.
“Please be assured that we will procure the equivalent amount of BTC equivalent to the outflow with the support of the group companies and we guarantee the full amount,” said DMM
The company reassured customers that all Bitcoin deposits would be fully reimbursed, with an equivalent amount procured from its group companies. Despite these developments, DMM Bitcoin has yet to respond to inquiries for comment.
According to De.Fi, a web3 security firm tracking crypto thefts and scams, hackers pilfered approximately $2 billion in crypto through numerous cyberattacks and thefts last year. Although still a significant sum, this total marks a decrease from 2020, signaling a downward trend in cryptocurrency-related cybercrime.
